Bahia Feliz: Family fun, easy launch, good winds

If you are a windsurfer with a spouse or a family to keep happy, you obviously have to make compromises. One of the best compromises on GC is Bahia Feliz. A nicely designed hotel complex with easy access to the beach  offers a lot to do for your kids, warm sunshine to your spouse, and some good sailing for yourself.

It is a good idea to book a trip here but keep the rental car available in case the windline wanders to the north. The area is also ideal for family day trips from other destinations of the island. This is also a good spot to launch for those southwesterlies of the winter.

Best hotels to store your gear (and your family) close to the beach are Tres Vidas and Las Pitas. Try to get a room with a ground terrace and a seaview.

The conditions are usually flat to choppy water with sideshore wind. First 200 meters may be gusty until you reach the windline. Easterlies can be strong, but as the wind turns north it tends to become a bit unreliable. It is advisable to use boards with sufficient volume to sail back to shore if the wind suddenly dies. Farther out the conditions may get rougher. Stay upwind!

It is not uncommon during the summer months to get 8-10-knot southwind here while Pozo is howling with 30-40 knot gale from the north. Sometimes you can see the whitecaps a kilometer away but there is simply no way to get there.

Bahia Feliz has very well organized rental service (Club Mistral). They are also happy to store your equipment if you decide to bring your own gear.

The bay is also an ideal training spot for those who wish to train course racing. One can easily do long coastline cruises from Maspalomas to Pozo. But not alone, please!

You find similar conditions at Playa Aquila at the southern end of the bay. Dunckerbeck Sideshore center rents out equipment and bungalows here. Only thing missing is the annoying windshelter close to the shoreline.

If you like to sail racing gear, they have excellent variety of Bjorns old rigs and boards to rent. Be warned though: use of his gear in a strong wind may be an unforgettable experience.
