Moderate wind brings kiters to Vargas Click on the image to see other beaches. |
If the wind turns north leaving the southernmost
spots of the island calm, you can usually choose between Pozo and Vargas.
If Pozo is crowded or the wind is just too strong it may be advisable to
try Vargas.
Leave motorway at the exit Vecindario/Arinaga and follow the signs towards Vecindario. Do not go left to Vecindario, but instead turn right towards Cruce de Arinaga. Follow the GC 812 (nowadays perhaps GC500) past Cruce de Arinaga towards Carrizal to the north until you find a roadsign pointing right to Vargas. You cannot miss it, since the town council has erected a statue of windsurfers in the middle of the intersection. There is absolutely nothing in Vargas so do not forget to bring a bottle of water with you. The beach and the rigging area are rocky, but low tide gives you nice sandy strip to launch from. The shorebreak is usually easier than in Pozo. The wave faces are normally 1-2 meters, but locals say that the biggest sailable conditions of the island are occasionally found here. The beach is big giving plenty of space to sail. It hardly ever gets crowded here. You can sail up to 800 meters out and still feel safe because the shoreline curves eastwards on your southern side to protect you. If the Vargas shorebreak is too heavy for your equipment, you can launch from the sheltered bay of Playa de Cabron about 2 kms south from Vargas. It is then easy to cruise upwind to bay of Vargas for some safe formula training. In short:
